The Black Racer Nerite Snail (Neritina pulligera) features a gleaming ebony shell that adds a sophisticated beauty to your aquarium while also serving some very useful purposes. This prime aquarium snail is part of the Nerite Snail family, which are considered the best eating snails in the world. They consume uneaten fish food, plus they wipe off aquarium glass, plants, and decorations. They also clear your aquarium substrate to keep it the correct color. This snail is peaceful and safe to keep with any nonaggressive aquarium fish, freshwater shrimp, and aquarium plants (such as Marimo Balls, java fern, etc.). Black Racer Nerite Snails are the largest Nerite Snail we offer, even beating out Tiger Nerites and Zebra Nerites. They are also significantly faster-moving and more active than all other types of Nerite Snails. Like all Nerites, they require salt water to reproduce and won’t overpopulate your home aquarium like other freshwater snails. They are perfectly suitable for planted tanks. Some Nerite Snails are initially finicky about eating dry foods, but typically enjoy spirulina or other foods with plenty of plant content, such as wafers and/or blanched vegetables. “Nerite Snails” is sometimes misspelled as Nirate Snails. While this snail can live in a wide variety of pH levels, it will live for much longer in alkaline water of over 7.0 pH. Acidic water increases susceptibility to shell erosion — we recommend a calcium supplement (especially when using reverse osmosis, aka R/O water) for maintaining the quality of this snail’s magnificent shell.
